What is the definition of a “Food Handler?”
“Food handler" refers to an individual working with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or food-contact surfaces.
Why do I need food handler training in Illinois?

ANAB-accredited Food Handler Training (like Userve’s course) is a legal requirement for food handler employees in the state.

Holding a Certificate of Completion or Food Handlers Card shows employers that you've received training and passed the required exam and are therefore allowed to work as a food handler.

The state of Illinois passed legislation requiring food handler training certificate programs to be accredited, such as by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Food handlers in Illinois must complete accredited training to receive a valid Food Handlers Certificate, required for employment in the food service industry. How long does the Illinois food handler training take?
The training course takes most people a few hours to complete. The course length can vary from person to person based on previous food handler experience, English language skills and computer literacy. Keep in mind that you can train at your own pace and start and stop as often as you like.

You have 12 months from the date of enrollment to complete the training program, including all course lessons and practice tests.

What will I learn from the Illinois Food Handler Course?
The Illinois Food Handler Training Course is designed to meet food safety training requirements from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard E2659. It also meets the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 2017 Food Code.

In order to unlock each section of the training, you will have to complete an end-of-lesson quiz. You will have unlimited attempts to score 100% and unlock the next lesson. At the end of the food handler training, there is a final exam.
Is there a final exam to obtain my Illinois Food Handlers Certificate?

At the end of the Illinois Food Handler Training Course, you will be required to complete a final exam that you must pass in order to get your certificate. You have 3 attempts to pass the final exam and you must score at least 70%.

What format is the final exam?
The format of the final exam is multiple choice.

How do I get an Illinois Food Handlers Card?

To get a Food Handlers Card, also known as a Food Handlers Certificate, you must obtain accredited food handler training and successfully pass a final exam. Userve’s food handler course is ANAB-accredited. Some counties may also issue their own Food Handlers Card, so it is recommended to check with your local health agency for more information.

Is an Illinois Food Handlers Card the same as a Certificate of Completion?
A Food Handlers Card, Food Handlers Certificate, and Certificate of Completion are all terms that describe what you get once you’ve successfully completed a food handler training program and passed a final exam. You may also find the term “Food Handlers License” being used to describe this type of certificate.
I’ve completed the course. How do I get my certificate?
Once you have successfully completed the Food Safety Training Program, you will need to write a final exam. Once you pass the final exam with a score of at least 70%, we will issue you your Certificate of Completion by email.
What is the Illinois Food Handlers Certificate used for?
This certificate program is required to work as a food handler employee. Holding an Illinois Food Handlers Certificate (also known as an Illinois Food Handlers Card) shows employers and health inspectors that you've received the required training to understand the fundamentals of food safety. Employers and health inspectors can also reach out to our team to verify employee completion of our Food Handler Training Program.
Upon successfully finishing the program, you will receive your certificate of completion that you can then show to your employer to confirm you’ve completed the training. Your local county may require additional verification steps. Contact your local authority to learn more.
How long is my certificate valid for?
Your Food Handlers Certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. (Subject to change. Verify with your local county health department.). It is not transferable to other people and cannot be applied to other courses in food safety training.
What happens if I lose my Illinois Food Handlers certificate?
